The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu Festival, is observed on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Its Gregorian calendar date changes each year. Celebrated by communities across China and beyond, the festival combines remembrance, seasonal traditions, food and community activities.

Origins and Cultural Meaning

The festival has several regional origin stories. The best-known tradition connects it with the poet Qu Yuan, while some communities commemorate Wu Zixu, Cao E or other historical figures. These associations developed alongside older seasonal customs, so the festival should not be reduced to a single universally proven origin.

Main Festival Customs

Dragon boat racing is one of the most recognizable activities. Teams paddle long, decorated boats to the rhythm of drums, turning the event into both a sporting competition and a community celebration.

Zongzi—glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves—is the best-known festival food. Fillings, shapes and flavors vary by region, from sweet red-bean or date fillings to savory meat, egg yolk and mushroom varieties.

Other traditional practices may include hanging mugwort and calamus, wearing scented sachets, participating in commemorative ceremonies and gathering with family. Customs differ among regions and communities.

A Living Cultural Heritage

China’s Dragon Boat Festival was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Its continuing regional diversity is part of the festival’s cultural value.
