Red Canarium wood, scientifically known as Canarium sp., is a premium commercial timber primarily sourced from Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It gets its name from its distinctive pinkish-brown to reddish-brown color and is widely marketed as "Red Canarium."
Color & Appearance: The wood has a consistent pinkish-brown tone with no significant difference between the heartwood and sapwood. It features a natural luster and a unique resinous scent when fresh.
Texture & Durability: Its interlocked grain and fine, uniform texture make it a stable and reliable material. It is considered medium in weight, hardness, and strength.
Exceptional Workability: Red Canarium is highly valued for its outstanding processing performance. It can be easily sawn, planed, turned, glued, and finished, and it holds nails well. Its low shrinkage rate makes it resistant to warping and deformation.
Thanks to its stability and ease of use, Red Canarium wood is a versatile choice for a wide range of applications:
Interior Decoration: Ideal for creating window and door frames, staircases, and decorative moldings.
Furniture Manufacturing: Especially suited for kitchen cabinets and other furniture.
Board & Veneer Production: A perfect material for producing high-quality veneers and plywood.
General Carpentry: Used for flooring, fine woodworking, packaging boxes, and formwork.
Despite its many advantages, Red Canarium has one notable drawback: poor decay resistance. Its low natural durability makes it unsuitable for outdoor use or in environments exposed to soil or moisture. For use in damp conditions, it must be thoroughly treated with a preservative. This limitation also makes it a poor choice for coffins or traditional wooden structures in historical restoration projects.
In the market, this timber is often categorized into "Red Canarium" and "Gray Canarium" based on its color variation. With an air-dry density of approximately 0.58-0.7 g/cm³, it is a medium-density, cost-effective timber from Southeast Asia, offering excellent value for a variety of interior decoration and furniture projects.
