Types of Boards: A Guide to Market Options for Your Projects
The market offers a wide variety of wood boards, each suited to specific applications. These include solid wood boards, plywood, density boards, particle boards, ecological boards, fireproof boards, and wood-plastic boards. Explore their features, uses, and benefits below to choose the right material for your needs.
1. Solid Wood Boards
Solid wood boards are crafted from intact wood, prized for their durability and natural grain patterns. They’re a top choice for premium wood decor and furniture, offering an authentic aesthetic. However, their high cost and demanding construction requirements limit widespread use in decoration. Classification depends on the wood species (e.g., oak, pine), with no universal size standard. While commonly used for flooring and door panels, most general applications favor engineered alternatives.
2. Plywood (Splint)
Also known as plywood or thin core board, this material consists of three or more layers of 1mm-thick veneer glued and hot-pressed together. A staple in handmade furniture, plywood comes in standard thicknesses: 3mm, 5mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, and 18mm. It’s categorized into hardwood plywood (e.g., birch) and softwood plywood (e.g., pine), offering versatility and strength for various projects.
3. Density Boards (Fiberboard)
Density boards, or fiberboards, are engineered from wood or plant fibers bonded with urea-formaldehyde resin or other adhesives. They’re classified by density: high-density (HDF), medium-density (MDF), and low-density. Known for softness and impact resistance, MDF is easily reprocessed, making it popular for furniture manufacturing abroad. In China, however, quality lags behind international standards, requiring improvement to meet global benchmarks.
4. Particle Boards
Particle boards are made from wood scraps mixed with glue and additives, pressed into thin sheets. Available as extruded or flat-pressed, they’re extremely affordable but lack strength, making them unsuitable for large or mechanically demanding furniture. Their low cost makes them a budget-friendly option for basic applications.
5. Ecological Boards (Melamine Boards)
Ecological boards, or melamine veneer boards, feature melamine-impregnated paper with various colors or textures, laminated onto particleboard, MDF, or hardboard via hot pressing. These decorative panels combine affordability with style, ideal for modern interiors and furniture surfaces.
6. Fireproof Boards
Fireproof boards blend siliceous or calcareous materials with fibers, aggregates, and adhesives, formed through autoclaving. Increasingly popular for their fire resistance, they’re used in high-safety environments. Installation requires precise gluing techniques, and premium options cost more than standard decorative panels. Thicknesses typically range from 0.8mm, 1.0mm, to 1.2mm, catering to diverse needs.
7. Wood-Plastic Boards
Wood-plastic boards combine hot-melt plastics (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC) with wood powder, straw, or plant shell fillers. Produced using advanced technology, they boast superior tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance, meeting or exceeding international standards. These eco-friendly boards suit outdoor and high-performance applications
