The rarest veneer cut — sliced perpendicular to the log, revealing the complete annual ring cross-section as a pattern of concentric circles unique to every single slice. An appearance that no other cutting method can produce.
"Each slice of butt cut veneer reveals the full growth history of the tree — decades of annual rings compressed into a single decorative surface."
Also known as: End-Grain Veneer · Cross-Cut Veneer · Annual Ring Veneer

The Cut
Butt-cut veneer is produced by slicing the log perpendicular to its length — cutting across the end, through all the annual growth rings simultaneously. This end-grain cutting method reveals the concentric circle pattern of the rings as they actually exist in the tree, along with the radial lines of the medullary rays that cross them.
The result is a surface pattern that is literally the cross-section of the tree's life — every ring representing one year of growth. No two slices are identical. No other cutting method produces this visual. It is the most distinctive, most recognisable, and most difficult-to-produce veneer type available.
End-grain cross-section — Pinus spp.
Properties
The circular ring pattern cannot be replicated by any other veneer cutting method — or any synthetic material. It is the tree's own cross-section, preserved as a decorative surface. Each slice is one of a kind.
Thin veneer slices reduce the cracking and splitting that solid end-grain wood blocks are notorious for, while preserving the visual authenticity of the true end-grain pattern.
Solid end-grain wood blocks of any significant size are extremely expensive and prone to failure. Butt cut veneer delivers the same visual effect at dramatically lower material cost and with far greater dimensional reliability.
Can be glued, pressed, sanded, stained, and finished using standard veneer processing techniques. Non-woven backed versions improve handling and installation further.
The specialised end-grain slicing process is more challenging and costly than conventional longitudinal veneer cutting — reflected in a premium price point.
Cross-grain structure expands and contracts more strongly with humidity. Requires proper acclimatisation and stable installation environment. Non-woven backed type reduces this risk significantly.
Improper bonding or conditioning may result in warping or adhesive bleed-through. We recommend professional installation, particularly for large surface areas.

Wood Species
Species determines the colour, ring density, contrast, and character of the end-grain pattern. Choose based on your project's tone and visual weight requirements.
Product Types
The veneer as nature produced it — no backing material added. Preserves the original wood colour, natural texture depth, and maximum authenticity of the end-grain surface.
True original wood colour — no backing interference
Maximum authenticity for fine woodworking
Suitable for skilled woodworkers and traditional finishing
Premium appearance for visible luxury applications
Can be finished, stained, or oiled as desired
Non-woven fabric reinforcement bonded to the reverse face — significantly improving stability, flexibility, and handling durability without affecting the visible front face appearance.
Enhanced dimensional stability — reduced moisture movement
Easier handling and installation for large surfaces
Lower risk of cracking during pressing
Smoother surface finish after bonding
Recommended for commercial and production use

Applications
Tabletops, cabinet doors, wardrobes, and accent furniture where the ring pattern becomes the statement feature of the piece.
Feature walls, ceiling panels, and flooring accents — the circular pattern creates warm, organic, and deeply sophisticated interiors.
Doors, wall panels, columns, and decorative architectural elements in residential and commercial spaces where natural drama is the design intent.
Decorative veneer on acoustic guitars and other instruments — contributing both aesthetic beauty and a natural tonal character story.
High-end gift boxes, artisanal packaging, and premium product presentation — where the natural ring pattern communicates genuine craft and material value.
Artisan DIY projects, decorative objects, and creative design applications requiring authentic natural character that no synthetic material can replicate.

Selection Guide
Match the species to your project's required colour tone, ring density, and visual contrast level.
Natural for maximum authenticity in skilled hands. Non-woven backed for commercial production and large-surface stability.
Plan your panel layout carefully — the circular pattern requires thoughtful positioning to create a cohesive visual rhythm across large surfaces.
Higher-grade veneer provides better surface consistency, fewer natural defects, and more uniform ring distribution — critical for premium visible surfaces.
