The buying decision

Support That Stays Consistent—Slat After Slat

Bed slats carry repeated, uneven loads for years. Their performance depends on more than species alone: veneer continuity, ply orientation, bond quality, moisture control, slat span and the distance between supports all matter.

All-birch plywood offers a dense, uniform base for premium bed systems. When produced to the agreed construction and dimensions, it supports consistent machining, reliable frame fit and stable mattress support. Final suitability should always be confirmed by a sample-panel or finished-bed load test.

Engineering note: “Heavy-duty” is not a universal load rating. Send the slat span, support spacing, target load, mattress type and frame design so the correct thickness and width can be evaluated.

Material comparison

All-Birch or Mixed-Species? Make the Specification Visible.

Premium specification

100% Birch Plywood Slats

  • Consistent all-birch species statement

  • Typically higher density and stiffness than poplar constructions

  • Clean B/B faces available for visible frames

  • Strong platform for precision machining and fastening

  • Designed for premium, contract and higher-load systems

Cost-led alternative

Poplar / Mixed-Core Slats

  • Lower material cost and lighter weight

  • Density and stiffness vary by core composition

  • Species content should be documented clearly

  • May require adjusted dimensions for the same frame target

  • Suitable when verified against the actual load design

Technical specification

A Clear Starting Point for RFQs

The values below reflect the product brief. The final quotation, approved sample, purchase order and batch documents should state the exact construction and compliance requirements.

Material All-birch plywood; no mixed species when specified and confirmed
Construction Typically 13–15 plies; exact lay-up confirmed by thickness and performance target
Face grade B/B target for clean visible surfaces
Moisture 10% ±2% target for indoor furniture applications
Bond / emission E1 or E0 options; test method and destination requirements confirmed before order
Surface Four-side planing and double-sided sanding; minimum 80 grit target
Long edges 3 mm radius available, subject to approved drawing
Tolerance target Thickness ±0.3 mm; width ±0.3 mm; length −0 / +3 mm
Certification FSC-certified supply available where confirmed for the exact order and batch

Dimensions

Standard Options. Custom-Built for Your Frame.

Choose the starting dimensions below or send your CAD drawing. Thickness, width, length, edge profile and packing are evaluated together with span and load requirements.

Thickness 20 / 22 / 25 / 28 / 30 mm

20 mm is a common starting point; heavier systems require design verification.

Width 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 70 mm

Custom widths can be evaluated for slat holders and frame geometry.

Length 1970 / 2170 mm

Other lengths made to drawing and confirmed production tolerance.

OEM Drawing-based production

Dimensions, radius, drilling, coating and packing can be quoted together.

Inside the slat

Why Multi-Ply Construction Matters

The majority of veneers run along the slat length, where bending stress is concentrated. Cross-banding layers help stabilise width, control splitting and reduce movement as indoor humidity changes.

For the specification described in the original brief, 13–15 birch plies and full-length veneers are the target. Exact veneer thickness, orientation and bond line must be confirmed on the approved sample and production documents.

Long-grain plies Primary bending resistance
Cross bands Lateral and dimensional stability
Continuous veneers No planned butt-joint weak points

Manufacturing controls

Six Checks That Protect Your Assembly Line

01 · VENEERS

Continuous full length

No planned butt joints or splices in the agreed all-birch construction.

02 · FACES

Closed, clean surface

B/B target and allowable repairs documented with photographs or samples.

03 · PLANING

Four-side machining

Uniform section supports repeatable fit in holders and frame fixtures.

04 · SANDING

Both faces smoothed

Minimum 80-grit target for direct use or further finishing.

05 · EDGES

Rounded long sides

3 mm radius available to reduce sharp corners and splinter risk.

06 · BATCH QC

Dimensions and moisture

Sampling plan, measuring method and acceptance criteria agreed before mass production.

Compliance without ambiguity

Confirm the Standard, Test Method and Batch

E1 and E0 descriptions can vary by market and test method. State the destination country, required standard and laboratory method in the RFQ. Destination-specific requirements—such as U.S. formaldehyde rules—should be verified separately rather than inferred from an E0 label.

FSC-certified supply can be arranged where available and confirmed for the exact order. Request a valid certificate scope and transaction-related documentation before representing a shipment as certified.

Documents to request

Approved product specification and drawing
Emission test report with method and result
FSC certificate details where ordered
Pre-shipment QC and packing list
Commercial invoice and bill of lading

Applications

Designed for Furniture Systems That Cannot Accept Weak Links

Platform beds Stable full-width mattress support
Slatted bed bases Repeatable dimensions for holders and rails
Adjustable systems Subject to cyclic-load and articulation testing
Hotel & contract Built for frequent use and replacement control
Premium residential Clean visible faces and dependable stiffness
Care & nursery furniture Only with the required verified emission documentation

Buyer checklist

Send These Details for an Actionable Quote

01 · Dimensions Length × width × thickness and tolerances
02 · Frame geometry Clear span, support spacing and holder design
03 · Performance target Static load, cyclic test or internal standard
04 · Finish Face grade, sanding, radius, drilling or coating
05 · Compliance Destination, test method and certification need

Loading plan: container volume and piece count vary materially by slat dimensions, packing method and pallet design. They will be calculated for the quoted specification; no single 31 m³ or 39 m³ figure should be treated as universal.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between all-birch plywood slats and poplar slats?

Birch is typically denser and stiffer than poplar, which can support higher-performance designs at comparable dimensions. Actual performance still depends on ply construction, thickness, span, bond quality and load. Compare approved samples or test finished-bed assemblies rather than relying on species alone.

Which thickness is most commonly requested?

20 mm is a common starting point for platform beds, while 22–30 mm options serve designs with longer spans, heavier loads or higher rigidity targets. The correct choice must be checked against width, support spacing and the frame’s load-test requirement.

Are FSC-certified birch bed slats available?

FSC-certified supply may be available. Confirm availability for the exact specification and order, then verify the supplier’s certificate scope and the documents required for the shipment before making a certified-product claim.

What emission grades can be supplied?

E1 and E0 options are available in the product brief. Because definitions and test methods differ by market, specify the destination standard and required laboratory method. U.S. or other national compliance should be confirmed independently rather than assumed from an E0 description.

Can you manufacture custom OEM dimensions?

Yes. Send length, width, thickness, tolerance, edge radius, drilling or coating details, annual volume and destination. A drawing is strongly recommended for holder interfaces and non-standard machining.

Why are cross-banding layers used?

Cross bands run perpendicular to the dominant long-grain plies. They improve lateral stability, help resist splitting and moderate width movement as humidity changes, while the long-grain plies carry most of the bending load.

How many cubic metres fit in one container?

There is no universal loading figure. Capacity depends on slat size, bundle arrangement, pallet dimensions and container type. We calculate the estimated cubic metres and piece count for the quoted specification and provide a packing plan before shipment.
