Melamine Facing Paper Durable. Decorative. Versatile.

Melamine facing paper is a decorative paper that has been saturated with melamine formaldehyde resin — a thermosetting plastic. The impregnated paper is bonded to a substrate such as particle board, MDF, or plywood under high heat and pressure. As the resin cures, it cross-links into a rigid, three-dimensional polymer network that is permanently fused to the board surface.

Key Properties

Why Melamine Facing Paper Is the Industry Standard Surface

Scratch Resistant

The cured melamine resin surface is significantly harder than most wood species. It resists scratching from everyday objects — keys, cutlery, utensils — that would visibly damage a lacquered or painted solid wood surface.

Water Resistant

The non-porous melamine surface repels water and liquid spills, preventing staining and moisture absorption. Ideal for kitchen cabinet doors, bathroom furniture, and high-humidity environments.

Heat Resistant

The thermosetting resin provides a strong barrier against moderate heat exposure — resistant to hot cups, steam, and surface temperature variations encountered in kitchen and commercial environments.

Easy to Clean

The smooth, non-porous surface wipes clean with a damp cloth. No special cleaning products are required. The surface does not harbour bacteria in the same way as porous materials, making it a hygienic choice for food preparation areas.

Unlimited Design Options

Melamine paper can be printed with any wood grain, marble pattern, solid colour, or abstract design at very low incremental cost — offering design versatility that far exceeds solid wood, which is limited by its natural appearance.

Fire Retardant

Melamine resin contains nitrogen — a natural fire inhibitor. The material absorbs heat rather than combusting readily, acting as a heat sink. This gives melamine surfaces a higher ignition threshold than many alternative surface materials.

Product Types

Two Types of Melamine Facing Paper

Both types share identical core properties — scratch resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, and ease of cleaning. The difference is purely visual.

Wood Grain Type

Wood Grain Melamine Paper

Printed with realistic wood grain patterns — oak, walnut, maple, pine, beech, teak, and many others. Modern digital printing creates highly convincing wood representations that are difficult to distinguish from real wood at normal viewing distance.

This type provides the warmth and character of natural wood at a fraction of the material cost, with none of the maintenance requirements of real wood surfaces.

Primary ApplicationsKitchen cabinets · Wardrobe doors · Dining furniture · Office desks · Interior wall panels · Flat-pack furniture components
Plain Solid Colour Type

Plain Melamine Paper

Available in a full spectrum of solid colours — classic whites, off-whites, and creams for contemporary kitchens; greys and blacks for modern industrial aesthetics; and custom mixed colours for brand-specific or designer requirements.

Plain melamine surfaces create clean, seamless panels that read as crisp and modern — popular in Scandinavian-influenced interior design, healthcare furniture, and commercial office environments.

Primary ApplicationsContemporary kitchen doors · Commercial furniture · Healthcare environments · Exhibition displays · Office furniture · Retail fitout

Note on colour accuracy: Melamine paper colours and grain patterns may appear slightly different on screen versus physical material, due to monitor calibration and photographic lighting. We strongly recommend requesting physical samples before committing to a production order. Samples are available free of charge on request.

Production & Applications

How Melamine Paper Is Made and Where It's Used

01

Base Paper Selection & Printing

High-quality base paper is selected for ink absorption and resin compatibility. The design — wood grain, plain colour, or pattern — is printed using gravure or digital printing.

02

Melamine Resin Impregnation

The base paper is passed through a liquid melamine formaldehyde resin bath, fully saturating the paper fibres. It is then dried and partially cured to B-stage — stable and handleable, but not yet fully cross-linked.

03

Hot Press Lamination to Substrate

The B-stage impregnated paper is placed on the substrate (particle board, MDF, or plywood) and pressed in a hydraulic hot press. Heat and pressure complete the resin cure, permanently bonding the paper to the board surface.

04

Quality Control & Dispatch

Finished panels are inspected for surface uniformity, gloss consistency, adhesion, scratch resistance, and dimensional accuracy. Panels meeting specification are edge-trimmed and dispatched.

Where Melamine Faced Panels Are Used

Furniture Manufacturing

Tables, cabinets, shelves, wardrobes, desks, and chairs. The dominant surface material for flat-pack and RTA furniture worldwide.

Kitchen & Bathroom Cabinetry

Cabinet doors and carcass interiors. Water and heat resistance makes melamine the default specification for kitchen cabinet manufacturers globally.

Interior Doors & Panels

Flush door skins, room dividers, partition panels, and wall cladding. The clean surface accepts standard door hardware without special treatment.

Commercial & Office Interiors

Office desk tops, shelving systems, reception counters, retail displays, and exhibition stands. Durability and easy cleaning are critical in commercial environments.

Flooring

Decorative top layer in laminate and engineered flooring products. The hard melamine surface provides the wear resistance required for floor applications.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is melamine facing paper?
Melamine facing paper is a decorative paper impregnated with melamine formaldehyde resin. When bonded to a substrate — particle board, MDF, or plywood — under heat and pressure, the resin cures into a hard, durable surface that is scratch-resistant, water-resistant, heat-resistant, and easy to clean. It is the world's most widely used decorative surface material for flat-pack furniture, kitchen cabinets, and interior panels.
What is the difference between wood grain and plain melamine paper?
Wood grain melamine paper is printed with realistic wood grain patterns (oak, walnut, maple, pine, and others) to simulate natural wood at a fraction of the cost. Plain (solid colour) melamine paper provides uniform solid colours for clean, contemporary surfaces. Both types are identical in durability — scratch resistance, water resistance, heat resistance, and easy cleaning. The choice is purely a design and aesthetic decision.
Is melamine paper water resistant?
Yes. The cured melamine resin creates a non-porous, sealed surface with excellent water and moisture resistance. Liquid spills wipe off cleanly without penetrating the surface. For applications with sustained water exposure (e.g. kitchen sink areas), edge sealing or banding is recommended as the substrate board can be affected by prolonged water ingress at exposed edges.
Does melamine paper have fire retardant properties?
Yes. Melamine resin contains nitrogen, which acts as a natural fire inhibitor. The material absorbs heat rather than combusting readily, giving it a higher ignition temperature than many alternative surface materials. This makes melamine faced panels a safer specification for commercial interiors, public spaces, educational facilities, and hospitality environments where fire safety standards apply.
What substrates can melamine facing paper be applied to?
Melamine facing paper is most commonly pressed onto particle board (chipboard) and MDF for furniture and cabinet production, and onto plywood for applications requiring structural strength. The hot press process — high temperature and pressure — is the same for all substrate types. The paper can also be supplied as loose impregnated sheets for manufacturers who run their own pressing operations.
How does melamine paper compare to PVC film and lacquered surfaces?
Melamine paper outperforms PVC film in heat resistance (PVC softens at relatively low temperatures) and is more environmentally stable over time. Compared to lacquered or painted finishes, melamine offers superior scratch resistance (the resin surface is harder than most lacquers), comparable water resistance if properly sealed, and significantly lower production cost since no separate painting or finishing line is required. Lacquer and paint allow unlimited colour matching; melamine colour range, while very wide, is limited to stocked patterns.
